Ensimmäinen päivä // The first day 

Ensimmäinen päivä Kuala Lumpurissa meni vähän matkaamisesta palautteluun. Yöunet olivat taas jääneet vähän vähille kun bussissa ei nyt niin hyvin tullut nukuttua. Hostellimme Raizzy's guesthouse sijaitsi aivan Chinatownin kupeessa lyhyen matkan päässä bussi- ja junayhteyksistä. Meillä oli oma huone ja hinta per yö kahdelta oli n. 15€. Hintaan sisältyi myös kahvi, tee ja suodatettu vesi, joita oli aina saatavilla sekä paahtoleipää hillolla ja voilla aamupalaksi. Hostellissa oli siistiä, mukava ilmapiiri ja sijainti oli todella hyvä. Voi siis mielelläni suositella hostellia kenelle tahansa Kuala Lumpuriin matkaavalle.

Kävimme ensimmäisenä päivänä meidän hostellin lähellä olevista nähtävyyksistä ja tarkoitus oli mennä katsomaan myös Botanical Gardens, mutta tulimme rankkasateen yllättämäksi ja puutarhassa kävely sateessa (Ilarilla oli vain fiksuna sadetakki, minulla ei mitään) ei olisi ollut kovin nautinnollista. Lähdimme siis takaisin hostellille päin. Kävimme Chinatownissa, Central marketilla ja Little Indiassa.

The first day in Kuala Lumpur went by fast while we recovered from the travels. We didn't sleep much on the bus and were quite tired. Our hostel was Raizzy's guesthouse which located right next to Chinatown. One night in a private room for two was 15€ which included coffee, tea and filtered water and a modest breakfast, toast with jam and butter. The hostel was clean, had a nice atmosphere and was on a central location. I can totally recommend this hostel :)

So on the first day we went to see some sights near the hostel and tried to go to the Botanical Gardens. We got surprised by heavy rain and decided not to go. It wouldn't have been very enjoyable to walk in the rain... We went to Chinatown, Central market and Little India.

Toinen päivä // Second day

Toisena päivänä meillä oli selkeä suunnitelma: suuntasimme ensin KWC ostoskeskukseen, siitä Bukit Bintang kaupunginosan kautta KLCC:hen katsomaan Petronas Towersit ja siitä vielä KL Towerin kautta takaisin. Päätimme kävellä, jotta näemme enemmän ja välimatkat eivät olleet niin pitkiä.

KWC fashion mall oli mainittu kartassamme must-see kohteena ja siellä mainostettiin olevan yli 800 outlet-kauppaa. Iso ja näyttävä (kuitenkin aika ruma) rakennushan se oli, mutta sisältö ei vastannut odotuksia. Olisi ehkä pitänyt tutustua tähän hieman tarkemmin, koska ostoskeskuksen vaatevalikoima oli lähinnä intialaista tai musmilityylistä. Lähdimme luonnollisesti tyhjin käsin kohti Bukit Bintangia, joka on kaupungin paras shoppailualue. Sieltä löytyikin sitten länsimaalaisia kauppoja ja kauppoja olisi riittänyt kyllä koko päiväksi. Kävimme parissa isommassa ostoskeskuksessa ja jatkoimme taas eteenpäin. Shoppailemaan ei kuitenkaan tälle reissulle tultu kun rinkat oli jo täynnä ja budjettikin rajallinen.

Saavuimme Petronas towersien luokse KLCC:hen (Kuala Lumpur city center) neljän maissa. Valoisan aikaan tornit eivät oikeen tehneet meihin vaikutusta, joten ajattelimme odottaa pari tuntia pimeän tuloa. Tornien yhteydessä on hieno ostoskeskus missä suurimmista osasta liikkeistä ei olisi varaa edes shoppailla. Pari tuntia meni nopeasti, taisimme syödäkin jotain siellä? ja menimme takaisin ulos katsomaan torneja. Suosittelen todella menemään pimeän aikaan ellei halua valoisan aikaan nousta näköalasillalle. Me päätimme, että säästämme ne rahat muuhun. Hienothan tornit olivat pimeällä ja vähän aikaa niitä ihailtuamme suuntasimme vielä KL Towerille.

Pohdimme hetken, että menemmekö sinnekään ylös käymään ja ajattelimme, että kerrankos sitä. Lippu taisi olla 52 ringittiä henkilö eli noin 13€. Olin aiemmin lukenut, että KL Towerista on paremmat näköalat, koska se on kukkulan päällä (taas vaihteeksi sai hikoilla) ja näköalatasanne on korkeammalla Petronas towersien. Illan pimeydessä kaupungin valot loistivat hienosti, vaikka kosteutta oli paljon ilmassa. Tajusimme, että Kuala Lumpur onkin oikeastaan aika pieni paikka :)

The second day we had a clear vision what to do: visit KWC fashion mall, Bukit Bintang area, Petronas Towers and the KL Tower.
We started from the KWC fashion mall which was advertised in our map as a must-see place with 800 outlet shops. I wish we had searched more information since the whole mall was filled with Indian and Muslim type clothing. Not a surprise that we didn't buy anything and headed to Bukit Bintang which is the biggest shopping district of KL. There we visited a couple of the biggest malls but since our backpacks were already full and had a limited budget we decided to head to KLCC (Kuala Lumpur city center) to see the Petronas Towers.

We reached the Petronas Towers around 4pm and were not so impressed with the sight. They were tall and big yes but there was no "wow" effect. We decided to wait until it gets dark and see them again. There was a huge shopping mall underneath the towers where we spent the time. Almost all shops were a bit too expensive for us so there was no shopping to do :D
The towers looked way better in the dark and we were happy that we waited. If you want to go there I totally recommend doing it after dusk.

The last stop of the day was the KL Tower. We decided to go up to the observation deck since we didn't do that in Petronas towers. I read from somewhere that the view is better since you go higher and the tower is located on a hill. (It was a nice and sweaty climb, again.) The ticket per person was 52 ringits (I think) which equals to approx 13€. The city lights shined bright although there was a lot of humidity. We realized that KL is quite small after all :)

Kolmas päivä // Third day

Kolmas päivä oli pyhitetty Batu-luolille. Luolat sijaitsevat noin 13 km päässä keskustasta ja parhaiten sinne pääsee junalla. KTM Komuter juna vei meidät perille keskustasta KL Sentral asemalta noin 20 minuutissa ja menopaluulippu maksoi 4 ringittiä eli huiman euron verran. Juna tulee suoraan luolien viereen.

Pääluola on ilmainen, joten älä usko jos joku yrittää periä maksua. Luolissa on kolme osaa, joista kaksi ovat maksullisia. Nyt en ollenkaan muista mitä maksoivat, koska ei niihin menty. Toinen oli dark caves missä mentiin vain taskulampun valolla tai näin ainakin jostain luin. Itse pääluola on iso, mutta ei kovinkaan ihmeellinen, joten jos haluat enemmän nähtävää kannattaa ehkä miettiä noita pimeitä luolia. Pääluolassa olevat temppelit ovat myös kovin vaatimattomia verrattuna niihin mitä olemme nähneet. Mallorcalla käytiin tippukiviluolissa ja kyllä ne veivät tästä voiton.

272 askeleen jyrkät portaat, jotka siinä helteessä ja kosteudesta olivat aika hapottavat. Luolien kohokohta ainakin minulle oli niiden suulla seisova 42,7 metriä korkea kullattu Murugan jumalan patsas.

Luolilla asustelee paljon makakiapinoita, jotka ovat aikamoisia vekkuleita, mutta niitä kannattaa pitää silmällä. Ei kannata pitää mitään ylimääräistä tavaraa esillä, varsinkaan ruokaa, koska apinat vievät kaiken. Yksi röyhkeä apina yritti jopa viedä Ilarin repun hänen kädestään! :D Taisi luulla vähän liikoja omista voimistaan.

Koska luolat ovat hinduille pyhä paikka, vaatetus tulee olla sen mukainen. Mielellään pitkät housut ja t-paita. Itselläni oli löysä hihaton ja en saanut siitä huomautusta. Miesten pukeutumiseen porteilla ei oikein näytetty puuttuvan. Pyhäksi paikaksi alueella, ja luolassa, on paljon myyntikojuja ym., jotka mielestäni pilaavat tunnelman ja tekevät paikasta vähemmän houkuttelevan.

On the third day we had planned to visit Batu caves which are located 13 km north from the KL center. It took 20 minutes from the KL Sentral station to the caves by KTM Komuter train. A return ticket cost only 4 ringits which is approx 1€ and the train takes you right next to the caves.

The main cave is free so don't believe if someone tries to get money from you. The main cave is nothing spectacular so don't get your hopes high. The temples inside aren't that amazing either compared to ones we've already seen during the trip. If you haven't been to any caves before I would suggest considering the dark caves where move with just the light of a flashlight.

To get to the caves you have to climb 272 stairs which in that heat and humidity make you sweat. I consider the statue of Murugan god the best part of the caves. The 42,7 meter high statue is quite a sight to see.

Watch out for the macaque monkeys which live in the area. Keep your belongings and food especially safe because they will try to steal it. One bold monkey tried to take Ilari's backpack from his hand! I think the monkey overestimated it's powers...

Since the caves are a sacred place for the Hindus you need to remember the dress code. Ladies preferably with long trousers and a t-shirt. I wore a loose sleeveless top and long trousers and it was fine. They didn't pay a lot of attention what men wore. For a sacred place there were many kiosks and other selling stalls, also inside the cave, which ruined the atmosphere and made the place uglier.

Neljäs päivä // Fourth day

Neljäntenä päivänä 1. lokakuuta oli lähdön aika kohti viimeistä kohdetta ennen Sydneyä, Singaporea. Edellisistä junakokemuksista oppineena otimme suosiolla bussin. Bussi oli saman yhtiön millä olimme tulleetkin Malesiaan. Lippu oli 55 ringittiä eli noin 14€, josta 5 ringittiä (reilu euro) meni hostellille järjestelyistä. Katselin hintoja myös netistä, mutta kaikista meni jonkinlainen varausmaksu, joten helpointa oli buukata hostellin kautta. Lähdimme matkaan kymmeneltä aamulla ja olimme Singaporessa neljän maissa. Rajalla kaikki meni hyvin, samalla tavalla kuin Malesiaan tultaessa eli ensin ulos Malesian puolella, leima passiin ja sitten taas ulos Singaporen puolella tavarat mukana ja tuloleima passiin.

On the fourth day 1st October we left KL to head south to the last destination before Sydney, Singapore. We had learned our lesson of the trains and took the bus instead. The bus was the same company's which we had used to get to KL. The ticket per person was 55 ringits, approx 14€. We left at 10am and arrived in Singapore around 4pm. Everything in the border went smoothly and in the same manner as we came to Malaysia.

On the road again...

The air-con was so cold, again, and I just wanted to get some sleep... 

Yleisiä fiiliksiä Kuala Lumpurista // Some things about KL in general

Ihmiset Kuala Lumpurissa ovat rentoja, iloisia ja ystävällisiä. Englantia puhutaan paljon paremmin kuin Thaimaassa ja asiakaspalvelu on sujuvampaa. Turhanpäiväistä tyrkyttämistä on myös paljon vähemmän ja ihmiset uskovat ensimmäisen "No thanks" (paitsi Chinatownissa). Pidin Kuala Lumpurista myös sen monikulttuurisuuden vuoksi.

Liikkuminen kaupungissa oli helppoa jalan, koska välimatkat eivät ole pitkiä ja kaupungin keskusta on oikeastaan aika pieni. Julkinen liikenne vaikuttaa myös toimivalta ja on ainakin paremmin suunniteltu kuin esim. Bangkokissa. Muutenkin Bangkokiin verrattuna KL on rauhallinen pikku kaupunki  :) 2 miljoonaa ihmistä on kuitenkin aika paljon vähemmän kuin 9 miljoonaa ja sen kyllä huomaa.

Sää oli aika samanlaista neljän päivän ajan - pilvistä, kuumaa ja kosteaa. Kyllä aurinkokin välillä paistoi, mutta ei sitä nyt niin paljoa siinä helteessä enää kaivannut. Vähän sateli, mutta ne menivät yleensä nopeasti ohi.

Jos pitäisi päättää lähden uudestaan Bangkokiin vai Kuala Lumpuriin niin kyllä Kuala Lumpur vie voiton. Maleasiaan voisi mennä muutenkin uudestaan esim. Borneon puoleinen Malesia, Melaka, Langkawi ja Penang kiinnostavat.

People in Kuala Lumpur are laid back, friendly and smiley in general. English is spoken more than in Thailand and customer service is way better. People don't try to sell you things in every street corner and understand when you say "No thanks" the first time you say it (except in Chinatown market). I also really enjoyed the multicultural aspect of the city.

Moving around in the city is easy even by walking since the center is quite small and everything is near. Public transport also works well and is way organized than in Bangkok. When compared to Bangkok, you can clearly feel the difference between 2 and 9 million people.

The weather was quite the same during the four days: hot, cloudy and humid. There was some sunshine but in that heat we didn't miss it that much. There was also some rain but they were just short showers.

If I had to decide whether I would go back to Bangkok or KL, I would definitely choose KL. I would like to go Malaysia again to see other places like Langkawi, Petang, Melaka and the side on Borneo.
