Viime postauksessa jäätiin joulun tunnelmiin. Olimme Cairnsissä hotellissa joulun ja sen jälkeen kävimme tietysti koralliriutalla kun olimme siellä. Otimme snorklaus/sukellusreissun, minulla oli mukana sukelluskokeilu, joka valitettavasti jäi aika lyhyeksi. Emme saaneet sitä heti maanantaille, joten ajelimme Babindaan ja olimme siellä päivän. Kävimme Babinda boulderseilla, joka oli hieno joki keskellä sademetsää. Kallio oli muotoutunut veden voimasta todella näyttäväksi. Vesi ei ollut yhtä kirkasta kuin Paradise Poolilla, mutta oli kuitenkin turvallista ja huoletonta uida.

Tiistaina suuntasimme takaisin Cairnsiin ja paattimme lähti matkaan puoli kymmenen maissa aamulla. Sää näytti hyvältä, aurinko vähän paisteli ja vesi oli suht tyyni eli oikein hyvä snorklaussää tässä vaiheessa. Riutalle kesti parisen tuntia, jonka aikana täyteltiin paperijuttuja ja minä kävin pienen sukellusperehdytyksen. Perehdytys oli hyvin pidetty, mutta itse olisin tarvinut enemmän aikaa laitteisiin tutustumiseen, joka tuli ilmi myöhemmin.
Sää kuitenkin muuttui matkan aikana pahempaan suuntaan ja aallot keinuttivat rajusti venettä. Saavuimme riutalle ja pääsimme snorklaamaan ja ensimmäiset sukeltajat menivät samalla. Minä olin syönyt pahoinvointilääkkeitä jo vähän ennen matkaa ja sen aikana ja Ilari matkan aikana. Minulle ne tehosivat, mutta valitettavasti Ilarille eivät :( Ensimmäistä kertaa elämässään Ilari oli oikeasti merisairas ja todella huonovointinen. Voi olettaa, että aallokkoon meneminen ja siellä keinuminen eivät houkuttaneet hirveästi, mutta Ilari keräsi voimia, veti märkäpuvun päälle ja sitten lähdettiin snorklaamaan.
Riutta oli hieno ja nähtävää oli paljon. Paikka jossa olimme oli aika syvä sukeltajia varten, joten niin hyvin koralleja ei nähnyt kuin olisi toivonut. Myös kova merenkäynti sekoitti vettä ja näkyyys ei ollut senkään takia niin hyvä. Kuvasaldo jäi aika pieneksi tästä syystä.
Snorklattuamme hetken oli minun vuoroni lähteä kokeilemaan sukellusta. En ole siis koskaan kokeillut edes sukellusta, tämä oli ihan ensimmäinen kertani. Ohjaaja auttoi varusteet päälle ja talutti veneen perälle. Pari kertaa siinä istuessa testasin regulaattoria ja sitten oli menoa. Siitä sitten vaan humpsis kaaduttiin veteen ja siellä oltiin aaltojen vietävänä. Meidän piti mennä veden alle tekemään taitotestit, jotta pääsemme sukeltamaan. Merenkäynti oli kovaa ja en meinannut millään pysyä kiinni köydessä ja maskiinikin oli mennyt jostain vettä. Sain kuitenkin köydestä otteen ja hengittelin ensimmäistä kertaa veden alla, joka tuntui aika yliluonnolliselta :D Veden alla oli rauhallisempaa ja aallot eivät tuntuneet siellä niin paljon.
Olin ensimmäinen jonossa suorittamaan testejä, koska olin mennyt viimeisenä veteen. Ei siinä kerinnyt kauheasti tottua olemaan veden alla kun piti olla jo tekemässä testejä. Ensimmäinen testi oli regulaattorin takaisin laittaminen veden alla jos se lähtisi vahingossa irti. En muistanut, että sen piti olla suupuoli alaspäin ja kuplia pulppusi valtavasti ylöspäin. Siinä tuli ensimmäinen moka ja vähän hätäännyin kun tajusin, että pidätin hengitystäni - ensimmäinen ja tärkein sääntö veden alla on, että älä ikinä pidätä hengitystä. Ensimmäinen yritys meni siinä ja nousin pintaan. Pinnalla aallot ottivat vallan ja heiluin mihin sattui. Sukellusliiveihin pystyy laittamaan ilmaa ja otettua sitä pois, jotta pääsee ylös- tai alaspäin helpommin, joten ohjaaja nosti ja laski minut tätä käyttäen. Hän kysyi, että haluanko yrittää uudestaan, tietysti halusin ja taas mentiin. En oikein pystynyt siinä rentoutumaan ja keskittymään kun aallot hakkasivat ja tulin miltein heti uudestaan pintaan. Ohjaaja sanoi, että viimeinen yritys, koska muut joutuvat odottamaan minun takiani. Eihän sekään enää onnistunut ja ajattelin, että tämä ei nyt ole tilanne missä minä tulen tätä hommaa sisäistämään. Olin todella pettynyt, mutta tämä tilanne ei nyt ollut minua varten. Normaalistihan sukelluskurssit aloitetaan rantavedessä tai uina-altaassa, ei myrskyssä avomerellä...
Kävimme myös pienellä hiekkasaarella ja Ilarinkin olo vähän tasoittui siellä. Minä snorklasin sinne, joka tuntui kyllä aikamoiselta treeniltä siinä myrskyssä. Nyt ainakin tietää miltä tuntuisi haaksirikkoutua oikeasti autiolle saarelle :D Siellä ei nimittäin ollut mitään paitsi pari linnunpesää. Oli ihan mielenkiintoista nähdä tällainenkin paikka.
Näin tällä kertaa, ei mahda mitään, mutta tärkeintä oli päästä riutalle ja näkemään koralleja ja se päästiin toteuttamaan. Olisi kyllä mukava päästä tekemään joskus hyvällä säällä toinen reissu ja johonkin toiseen kohtaan riutalle. Valitettavasti sää voi muuttua nopeasti kuten meillä ja sitten ei auta muu kuin yrittää ottaa kaikki irti siitä tilanteesta. Sukellus tuntui mielenkiintoiselta ja ajattelin kokeilla sitä vielä Suomessa vähän hallitummassa ympäristössä :D

Riutalla seikkailun jälkeen menimme vielä yhdeksi yöksi Babindaan, josta lähdimme sitten seuraavana aamuna ajelemaan alaspäin. Ajattelimme viettää uuden vuoden Townsvillessä, joten sinne sitten parissa päivässä köröteltiin. Pysähdyimme Etty Bayssä siinä toivossa, että olisimme nähneet kasuaareja (cassowary), mutta valitettavasti emme nähneet. Saimme vinkin tästä yhdeltä paikalliselta kun kävimme Paradise Poolilla. Kasuaari on siis strutsilintujen lahkoon kuuluva lintu, jota pidetään maailman vaarallisimpana lintuja. Etty Bayssa tuli hyvin ilmi se miksi ei haluta uida meressä pohjoisessa, kuvissa lisäinfoa...
Townsvillen kaupunki oli järjestänyt asukkaille (ja vieraille ;) ) ulkoilmaelokuvateatterin ja pari ilotulitusnäytöstä. Otettiin pikniktarvikkeet mukaan ja retkituolit olalle ja suunnattiin The Strandille, eli rantabulevardille. Molemmat ilotulitusnäytökset olivat hienoja, mutta tietysti puolenyön näytös oli näyttävämpi. Australiassa ei myydä ilotulitteita ollenkaan kuluttajille, joten varmaan koko kaupunki oli katsomassa ilotulituksia.
Olimme päättäneet, että ajamme Griffithiin katsomaan joko sieltä löytyisi töitä. Pohjoisen kosteuteen ja sadekauteen ei tehnyt mieli jäädä töihin ja meillä oli kuitenkin suunnitelmissa mennä Melbourneen/Adeleideen seuraavaksi. Cairnsiin ajaminen oli tehnyt mukavan loven budjettiin, koska Rambo ei valitettavasti kulje kauniilla ajatuksilla ja auringonlaskuilla :D
Ajoimme Rockhamptoniin asti rannikkoa, josta sitten lähdimme sisämaata kohti. Koko matkamme reitti on päivitetty tuonne Reitti-välilehden alle :) Kartasta klikkaamalla pääsee katsomaan tarkemmin. EDIT: Näköjään ei tee yhteistyötä kanssani, joten vähän on alun kaupungit sekaisin, mutta Australian osuus on ajan tasalla.
Tällä ajomatkalla emme paljon pysähdelleet paitsi parilla näköalapaikalla ja vanhalla kultakaivoksella Peak Hillissä. Yöt vietettiin perinteisesti ilmaisilla leiripaikoilla.
Nyt ollaan tosiaan taas Griffithissä, samassa tutussa kirjastossa käyttämässä maailman hitainta wifiä. Kuvat pitää mennä lataamaan mäkkäriin kun täällä menis muuten koko päivä :D Tänään pitäis vihdoin saada tieto yhestä farmipaikasta, toivottavasti lykästää! :)

After Christmas in the hotel we booked a snorkeling trip to the Great Barrier Reef. We had to wait one day since they were fully booked so we drove to Babinda and spent two nights there. We visited the Babinda boulders which was a beautiful river in the middle of the rainforest. The water wasn't as clear as in Paradise Pool but still cool and safe ;)
***Warning: here begins a long story of our snorkeling/diving trip, skip to the end if not interested ;)***
On Tuesday morning we drove back to Cairns and the boat left around 9.30 am. The weather looked fine in the morning but soon after we got going the weather changed for worse and waves started to rock the boat. It took two hours to reach the reef and we had some induction and paperwork while getting there.
I already took some motion sickness pills before we left and Ilari some during the trip but unfortunately he became really sick. First divers went in and we got to go snorkeling. Ilari gathered all this strength, put on the wet suit and then we went. The reef was beautiful and there was a lot to see. Unfortunately the waves mixed the water so that the visibility wasn't that good. The spot was also quite deep because of the divers so you couldn't see that well. Because of that there's not too much pictures.
After snorkeling for a while it was my group's turn to go diving. Before the actual dive we needed to perform three skills to be able to go. This was my very first time ever. The instructor helped the gear on me and soon I was sitting on the edge ready to go. I tried the regulator for a couple breaths and then it was time to take the "jump". The waves were quite high and rocked me as I tried to get a hold of the rope in the water. I was the last one in the water but first to do the skills so I didn't have a lot time to get familiar with the breathing under water thing :D It did feel amazing, almost supernatural :D
First skill was to practice putting the regulator back on if it accidentally comes off. I took it off the wrong way and lots of bubbles came out (of course). Then I kinda panicked because I realized that I wasn't blowing bubbles - the most important rule is to always breath, just blowing bubbles out of your mouth counts as breathing :D So I needed to get up to the surface since I wasn't handling my breath. It was very quickly since the instructor used my air vest. He asked if I wanted to try again and of course I wanted so he took me quickly back down again. I barely was able to catch my breath when we were on the surface because of the waves so I needed to come back again. Now the instructor said that it's my last try since everybody has to wait because of me. Well it didn't work for the last time so I had to come up and go back on the boat. I was really disappointed but this situation wasn't for me and I couldn't learn anything there. Normally diving is started in shallow water or in a pool and this was far from it.
We also visited a small sand island which was interesting to see. Now we know how it would feel to get shipwrecked on a stranded island. There was literally nothing, just a few bird's nests :D
Well, we still managed to see the reef and snorkel so it was the main point. It would be nice to go there again, maybe to some other part of the reef and in a better weather. But you never know about the weather so what can you do. Diving felt interesting and I would definitely want to try it again, in a more controlled environment :D

After the reef experience we stayed one night in Babinda and started to drive towards Townsville. We had decided to spend the New Year's Eve in there because they had some nice free program. An outdoor movie theater and of course fireworks! Before Townsville we stopped in Etty Bay since we heard from one local that you can spot cassowaries there but unfortunately we didn't see any :( Etty Bay is a good example of beach where you don't feel like swimming, more info in the pictures...
In Townsville we took our picnic food and chairs and headed to The Strand which is the beach boulevard. Both fireworks where amazing but of course the midnight's was more spectacular. In Australia they don't sell fireworks to consumers at all so the whole town was basically watching the shows.
We had decided to drive to Griffith to see if there's any work around there. Our next plan is to go to Melbourne/Adeleide so it was on the route as well. We didn't want to stay in the north because it was too hot and humid for us. Driving all the way up to Cairns had made a big hole in the budget since unfortunately Rambo doesn't run with pretty thoughts and beautiful sunsets :D
We drove down by the coast until Rockhampton and then took the route towards inland. By the way, the whole route of our trip is in the "Route" tab. Click the map to see it in more details. EDIT: Apparently the app doesn't co-operate with me and some cities in the beginning are in the wrong order but the Australia part is right :)
On the way down we didn't stop in many places, just a couple of lookouts and an old gold mine in Peak Hill.
So now we are in Griffith, in the same library with the same "slowest on Earth" wifi (I even have to go to the Macca's = McDonald's to download the photos)... We are waiting to hear from one farm if we got some work. Fingers crossed!
