Bundabergistä matka jatkui taas pohjoista kohti ja seuraava pysähdyspaikka oli Agnes Water ja maan kuulut $17 surffitunnit. Ranta on aivan upea ja sen vieressä oleva Workman's beach ei yhtään huonompi. Ilmaista leiripaikkaa ei kylässä ole, mutta Workman's beachillä oli leiripaikka, joka oli hyvin huokea, $7 yö per henkilö. Leiripaikalla oli siistit vessat, ulkosuihku, tiskien pesupaikka ja paikat oli merkitty hyvin. Paikalle vaan mennään ja sitten aamulla seitsemän maissa rangerit, suomeksi metsän/puistonvartijat, tulevat rahastamaan. Ei tarvitse sitoutua tai tehdä varauksia, joten sopii hyvin tällaisille backpackereille.
Ensimmäisenä päivänä kävimme testailemassa meidän bodyboardia, joka osoittautui myöhemmin virheeksi. Meillä tuli vähän paikat kipeiksi, Ilarilla kädet erityisesti ja minä sain pikku naarmun polveeni. Seuraavana aamuna sitten yhdeksän jälkeen surffausta opettelemaan paikat jo valmiiksi vähän jumissa. Surffaushan näyttää kovin helpolta ja kivalta, mutta sitä se ei ole :D Tai kivaa kyllä, mutta ei helppoa.
Surffitunnilla oli varmaan kolmisenkymmentä osallistujaa, joten vedessä oli vähän ruuhkaa ja kaikki eivät olleet ihan sisäistäneet ohjeistusta, ainakin toiminnasta päätellen. Monia hyviä aaltoja saatiin ja päästiin molemmat pari kertaa laudan päälle seisomaankin. Sieltä tultiin kyllä sitten aika nopeasti myös alas :D Pääpaino oli kuitenkin sillä, että harjoiteltiin aallolle pääsyä ja sillä "ratsastamista".
Parin tunnin jälkeen alkoi pikkuhiljaa paikat jo väsyä ja keskittyminen herpaantua. Tässä kohtaa olisi voinut olla fiksu ja lopettaa, kuten Ilari teki, mutta minä vetelin viimiseen asti. Taisin olla jopa viimeinen, joka vedestä nousi. Viimeinen aalto olikin aika hurja ja kun kävelin rantaan niin Ilari huomasi, että olin saanut jalkaani aikamoisen haavan. Eihän sitä kukaan mitään tatuointeja tarvitse, arvet ovat hienompia ;) Minulla on nyt ainakin muisto ekalta surffitunniltani :D
Ajomatka jatkui seuraavana aamuna Cairnsiä kohti. Pysähdyimme Mackayssa pulahtamassa keskustassa sijaitsevassa Bluewater lagoonissa, siinä taisi olla kolme allasta ja pari liukumäkeä, enemmän kuin siis pelkkä uima-allas. Söimme vähän lounasta ja jatkoimme matkaa. Pohjoisessa ei kannata enää kauheasti meressä uida ilman märkäpukua, koska meduusoja ja muita pistäviä ystäviä on kesäaikaan liikenteessä. Onneksi näitä uima-altaita ja laguuneja on tehty, jotta ihmiset pääsee virkistäytymään kuumuudessa. Uimarannoilla on verkoilla rajattu alue missä pääsee uimaan, mutta se ei ole kovin iso.
Townsvillen jälkeen yön vietimme yhdellä "rest arealla" Mackayn ja Townsvillen välissä. Nämä alueet ovat tavallisia levähdysalueita paremmin varusteltuja ja niistä löytyy yleensä vessojen lisäksi myös piknikpöytiä, grillejä ja/tai tulentekopaikkoja. Yleensä alueella saa yöpyä vain yhden yön ja ovat pääteiden varsilla. Jos mitään hyvää leirintäpaikkaa ei ole ollut järkevän ajomatkan päässä päätieltä, olemme yöpyneet tällaisille. Toiset paikat ovat huoltoasemat tai kuten täällä sanotaan "service station" eli "servo". Huoltoaseman pihassa yöpyminen ei ole myöskään mikään ihmeempi leirintäelämys, mutta menee paremman puutteessa ja varsinkin ajopäivinä.
Mackayn jälkeen siis pysähdyimme Townsvillessä. Siellä kävimme Castle Hillin näköalapaikalla, josta näkyi hienosti koko kaupunki ja sen edustalla oleva Magnetic Island. Kävimme pulahtamassa Rock Poolissa ja söimme lounasta ja taas jatkui matka. Cairns alkoi jo lähestyä kuten myös joulu ja odotetut hotelliyöt. Almost there ;)
Cairnsiä ennen pysähdyimme Rollingstonessa, jossa viivyimme pari yötä taas vähän hengähtäen. Rollingstonesta ajoimme Babindaan, mutta sitä ennen kävimme aivan mahtavalla Crystal Creekillä uimassa. Ei ihme, että paikalle on annettu nimi "Paradise Pool". Vesi oli todella kirkasta eikä tarvinut pelätä krokotiilejä, meduusoja tai haita :D Ja vesi oli tietysti makeaa, joten ei tarvinut kärsiä suolastakaan. Joessa ui upeita isoja taimenia ja pari kilpikonnaakin nähtiin.
Babindassa oli todella hyvä leirintäalue, josta löytyi kaikki mitä kaipasi ja vielä ilmaiseksi. Tilat olivat siistit ja ihan viimeisen päälle. Pikku kylän kirjastolla oli vielä wifikin niin pääsi nettiinkin. Oikein mukava paikka pysähtyä ennen Cairnsiä.
Jouluaattoaamuna ajelimme sitten vihdoin ja viimein Cairnsiin. Lähtöpäivä Sydneystä oli 29. marraskuuta ja nyt miltein neljä viikkoa myöhemmin olimme vihdoin perillä.
Oli aivan ihanaa päästä nukkumaan oikeassa sängyssä, nauttia ilmastoinnista ja jääkaapista, katsoa telkkaria, käydä uimassa, syödä hyvin, nukkua pitkään, valvoa myöhään ja tärkeinpänä ihan olla vaan ja nauttia. Ja se oma suihku ja vessa, ai että ;) Kyllä sitä autossa asumisen jälkeen osaa arvostaa ihan perusarjen juttuja kuten jääkaappia ja suihkua. Nopeasti siinä ne kolme yötä sitten menivätkin. Tuli kyllä niin tarpeeseen. Kiitos iskälle, Erjalle ja Lasselle :)

We continued the journey towards Cairns from Bundaberg and the next stop was Agnes Water and the famous $17 surf lessons. The main beach is amazing and the Workman's beach which is next to isn't too bad either. We stayed near the beach in a campsite which had outdoor shower, toilets, dish washing place and good marked spots. It was only $7 per night per person and the rangers came every morning to collect it.
On the first day there we tried out our bodyboard which turned out to be not such a good idea. Ilari's hands got sore and I got a nice scratch on my knee.. Next morning after nine we started our surfing lesson. Surfing looks pretty easy but it's not. Fun, but not easy. We both managed to stand on the boards a couple of times but that was it. We came quite quickly down :D Mostly it was practicing how to catch a wave and ride it. After a couple of hours we were pretty tired and Ilari was smart to stop before getting too tired. I didn't :D I think I was the last one out of the water. The last wave must have been quite something since when I got up Ilari saw that I had a cut in my left foot. Who needs tattoos when you can have scars ;) Now I have memory of my first surfing lesson.. :D
The next morning we hit the road again and stopped in Mackay to have lunch and take a dip in the Bluewater Lagoon. It had a couple of slides and three pools I think so it was more than just a pool. We spent the night in a rest area between Mackay and Townsville. Rest areas normally have toilets, picnic tables, fire pits or bbq's and you can stay one night in them. The other option are gas stations or service station, "servos" as they say here. You can sleep somewhere next to the trucks and use the toilets and if you're lucky showers as well. These of course are not the best choices but when you are just driving all day they are a good spot next to the highway just to sleep for one night. Then you wake up early and move along :)
So after Mackay we stopped at Townsville. We visited the Castle Hill lookout, had some lunch and had a swim in the Rock Pool. These kind of pools and lagoons are good because in the summer you don't want to go swimming with stingers and other nasty creatures :D
The next a couple of nights we spent in Rollingstone. It was nice to stay a couple of nights there to relax and take a break from driving. From Rollingstone we drove to Babinda but before that we stopped in Crystal Creek. The place was called "Paradise pool" and I don't wonder why. The water was crystal clear and the place was really beautiful. We saw some trouts and turtles there. The water in the river was sweet and cold so we didn't need to worry about crocodiles, stingers or sharks :D
There was a really nice free camping area in Babinda which new amenities and everything you needed for a nice stay. There was even wifi in the small library in the town so we got to use some Internet.
On Christmas Eve morning we drove to Cairns, we finally had made it! :) After almost four weeks we had reached our destination. It was just a normal hotel but even all the small things felt like luxury: own toilet and shower, tv, a super huge bed, air conditioning and fridge. After two months in a car this all felt so good. There was nice pool area where we spent a lot of time chilling. The weather was so hot and humid so it was either the room or the pool :D We stayed up late and woke up late, relaxed and ate well. It was a really nice Christmas all in all. Too bad the three nights went so quickly :D
