Maisa & Ilari travels: Down Under: helmikuuta 2016

Nyt on reilu kolme viikkoa vierähtänyt töissä Darlington Pointissa luumujen kuivaustehtaalla. Työ on helppoa ja päivät ovat yleensä 9 tuntia, joten mikäs tässä. Asumme pienissä parakkihuoneissa tehdasalueella, vessat & suihku sekä keittiö ovat jaettu kaikkien kesken. Meidän lisäksi tässä asuu kaksi kanadalaista ja kolme brittia. Kaksi saksalaista asuu luumufarmilla, mutta ovat töissä myös tehtaalla. Työskentelemme linjastolla, johon tuoreet luumut tulevat ja josta ne laitetaan valmiiksi uunia varten. Työt ovat sisältäneet minun osaltani luumujen levitystä tarjottimille (noin 1m x 1m ritilöitä), lehtien ja tikkujen siivoamista niiltä ja tarjottimien laittamista putsauslaitteeseen, joka ottaa kuivatetut luumut pois. Ilari on enimmäkseen nostellut täysia tarjottimia rullakoihin ja laitellut niitä putsauslaitteeseen. Vaikea selittää miten tuotanto menee, mutta tahti on nopea ja työ on valitettavasti todella yksitoikkoista. Päivän päätteeksi sitten siivoillaan laitteet, josta saa mukavasti extratunteja viikkoon.

Darlington Point on tosi pieni kylä Murrumbidgee joen varrella, noin 30 km etelään Griffithista. Täältä löytyy pieni supermarket, pubi/hotelli, italialainen ravintola, pari kahvilaa, lihakauppa, poliisi, yleinen uima-allas, bolws-klubi ja siinäpä melkein se. Päivät menee suurimmaksi osin töissä ja sitten vaan hengaillaan. Ollaan käyty joella uimassa, joka ei ole ihan kaikista huokuttelevin paikka, mutta ihan virkistävää. Vesi on ruskeeta ja virtaus on todella kova, joten ei ihan mikään rentouttavin paikka. Läheisestä Gumview-kahvilasta saa ihan parasta fried chicken eli uppopaistettua kanaa. Paljon parempaa kuin KFC:ssa ;) Kylän pubi on vielä testaamatta.

Farmikoira vaihtui tehdaskissaan, joka on hyvin seurallinen ja aina oven takana mouruamassa aamusta iltaan. Kuulemma asui ensin uuneissa ennen kuin tehdas laitettiin käyntiin, nyt sillä on oma pieni peti yhdessä varastossa ja ruokaa ja vettä aina saatavilla. Yritetään kovasti sita lihottaa :D

Täälla alkaa näkyä pieniä merkkejä syksystä, yöt alkaa viilentya ja on siella 10-15 asteen hujakoilla. Toisaalta taas tällä viikolla oli kolme päivää yli +40. Katellaan miten tää syksy lähtee käyntiin. Helmikuu on vähän niin kun elokuu meille, että saattaa olla vielä kovinkin lämmintä.

Vielä varmaan viikko töitä ja sitten vähän lomailua. Maaliskuun puolessa välissä ois luvassa Melbourne ja Formula GP-kisat. En malta odottaa! Eipä tän ihmeempiä nyt tänne, kiitettävät 61 tuntia tuli ensimmäisellä viikolla, toisella viitisenkymmentä kun pidettiin yksi vapaa ja kolmannella lähes 60h eli ei ihme jos on vähän hiljasta täältä suunnalta.
Huomenna taas vapaapäivä, 12 päivää olikin jo painettu hommia. Ensi viikko meneekin tehtaan siivoushommissa. Palaillaan taas kun on jotain kirjotettavaa :)

It has three weeks now in Darlington Point. We are working in a prune drying factory. Work is really easy and we normally work around 9 hours a day. We live in small units next to the factory, we share toilet & shower and the kitchen with each other. There’s two Canadians, three British and us living here. There’s also two German guys but they live in units next to the farm but still work at the factory with us. We are working on the line where the fresh prunes come in and are put on trays which put on trolleys ready to go to the ovens. I have been cleaning the fresh prunes from leaves and sticks and sometimes put the trays to a scraper which takes dried ones away and Ilari has been putting the fresh trays into the trolleys as well as putting the others to the scraper. It’s a bit hard to explain like this but hopefully that gives you some idea. Work is fast paced, simple and unfortunately pretty boring sometimes. We always stay for clean up so we get some extra hours.

Darlington Point is a really small town by the Murrumbidgee river, about 30 km south from Griffith. Here’s one little supermarket, pub/hotel, a couple of cafes, an Italian restaurant, a butcher shop, public swimming pool, police station, bowls club and that’s about it. Most of the time we’re just working so we don’t need a lot of entertainment here anyways. We’ve gone to the river for a swim but it’s not very nice. The current is really strong and the water is brown. Gumview café nearby offers the best fried chicken ever, way better than KFC. We haven’t tested the pub yet.

Our farm dog changed into a factory cat which is always looking for attention and someone to pet him. Before they put the ovens on it was living in the factory but now he has his own bed in a shed. We’re trying to feed him to make him a bit fatter ;)

We’re noticing some signs of fall but not much. The nights are getting colder, around 10-15 degrees but then we still get some +40-degree days. I think the fall is coming but very slowly, not like we have been used to. February is still a summer month but I think it’s kind of like August for us.

We have maybe one week left here with the prunes and then some holiday and in the middle of March we are off to Melbourne and to the Formula 1 GP! I can’t wait! But that’s all from Darlington Point, nothing special going on. First week we did 61 hours, second week around 50 hours but we had one day off and last week almost 60 again. So there’s not going to be very exciting updates coming from Darlington Point anymore. I'll write again when there's something to write about :)
