Vinkkejä road tripille // Tips for a road trip

Vinkkejä road tripille ja ajamiseen yleensä:

• Mieti aikataulua ja rahaa. Meillä oli paljon aikaa, joten ei tarvinut suunnitella sen tarkemmin. Mentiin fiiliksen mukaan. Kilometrejä kertyy ja tankkia saa olla täyttämässä usein. Joka paikasta ei löydy ilmaisia campingalueita, joten niihinkin pitää budjetoida. Sydneystä Cairnsiin meillä meni nelisen viikkoa ja n. $500 bensoihin.
• Muista ajaa vasemmalla ;) Aika paljon on kylttejä, jotka muistuttaa, joten ei pitäisi olla ongelmia. 
• Lataa jokin offline-kartta, jota voit käyttää älypuhelimella navigointiin. Et tarvitse navigaattoria tai paperikarttoja ja rahaa säästyy. Meillä on käytössä Here Maps.
• Tsekkaa reitti tullien varalta ja laita asetuksista "vältä tulleja" tms. päälle, jotta et eksy niille vahingossa. Niin kuin me kun ekaa kertaa ajettiin Sydneyyn..
• Ehdoton ykkönen leirintäalueiden etsimiseen on Wikicamps. Maksoi Google Play-kaupassa 5,88€ ja on jokaisen sentin arvoinen. 
• Australialaiset ovat surkeita kuskeja (sorry!), joten extra varovaisuutta liikenteeseen.
• Liikenneympyröitä on joka paikassa ja australialaiset eivät osaa vilkuttaa niissä mitenkään. Täällä on muutenkin vähän eri säännöt niissä vilkuttamisessa, mutta eivät tee niidenkään mukaan. Teitä on varoitettu...
• Vältä hämärällä ja pimeällä ajamista sillä villieläimiä liikkuu silloin paljon. Autoissa oleva perusvakuutus ei kata eläinkolareita, ainoastaan henkilövahingot. 
• Kilometrejä tulee paljon, joten muista tarkistaa öljyt, jäähdytinnesteet, renkaiden paineet yms. tarpeeksi usein.
• Muista vuodenajat, esim. pohjoisen sadekaudella voi tulvia monia metrejä, joten teitä on kiinni tai esim. hiekkatiet ovat todella mutaisia. Kesällä taas lämpötilat nousevat helposti yli 40 asteeseen, jolloin ajaminen ei ole kovin mukavaa. Eli suunnitele ajankohta hyvin (lue: paremmin kuin me) ;) Cairnsissä alkoi juuri sadekausi ja autossa oli ajoittain todella kuuma, mutta hyvä reissu kuitenkin. 
• Auton hankkimisesta infoa löytyy täältä. Vuokrafirmoja ovat mm. Jucy, Wicked (en suosittele!), Britz, Autobarn, Apollo, Spaceship, Budget, Hertz, Avis.. 
• Jos ajat outbackissä suunnittele tankkaukset tai tankkaa aina tankki täyteen kun näet aseman. Voit harkita myös bensakanisterin ostoa. 
• Bensan hinta kallistui pohjoiseen mentäessä, etelässä noin $1.2 litra kun pohjoisessa $1.3. Halvinta bensaa löysimme Ayristä $1.1 litrahintaan. 
• Jos käyt Woolworthsissä tai Colesissa ruokaostoksila ja tuhlaat yli $30 saat normaalisti 4 senttiä/litra alennuskupongin heidän yhteistyöasemille (BP, Caltex, Shell). Tai jos käytät heidän huoltoasemien myymälöihin tietyn määrän rahaa niin saat toisen 4 sentin alennuksen, mutta kannattaa miettiä onko se sitten enää sen arvoista.

Meillä on mittariin kertynyt noin 12 000 km ja vielä on Ulurun reissu tekemättä. Saa nähdä paljon on sitten kun autosta pitää luopua.

Tips for a road trip and driving in general:

• Think about time - how much time do you have and what do you want to see. Also think about the budget and how you're going to camp. There’s no free camp sites everywhere. It took us about 4 weeks from Sydney to Cairns and cost around $500. 
• Remember to drive on the left side ;) There's quite a lot of signs which remind you so you should be okay. 
• Download an offline map to your phone so you don't need to buy printed maps. Then you have a navigator as well. We used Here Maps. 
• There's toll roads around the big cities so put on "avoid toll roads" etc. from your navigator so you don't end up on them by accidentally  (like we did when we first drove to Sydney).
• Number one app for finding a camp site is Wikicamps. It's a definite must. Cost 5,88€ in Google Play store but it worth every cent. 
• Aussies are crappy drivers (sorry!) so be extra careful on the road.
• There's roundabouts everywhere and Aussies have a funny way of signaling in them. They signal when they go in and out, at least they should. Pay extra attention when driving into them.
• Avoid driving during dawn, dusk and at night since there's a lot of animals on the move. The compulsory insurance (CTP/green slip) for your car only covers for human injuries. 
• There will be a lot of kilometres on the road so remember to check oil, coolant, tire pressure etc. often enough. 
• Think about the seasons when you're planning the trip. Wet season in the north is quite extreme with floods and rain as well as summer it gets way over +40 degree heat in many places. We could have planned a bit better since we arrived to Cairns when the wet season just started and it was quite hot in the car but we still enjoyed the trip very much. 
• You can find info from buying a car from here. Some rental companies are Jucy, Wicked (don't recommend!), Britz, Autobarn, Apollo, Spaceship, Budget, Hertz, Avis.. 
• If you're driving in the outback plan your petrol consumption and be prepared that there's not that many stations. A good rule is to always fuel when you see a station. You can also think about getting a jerry can.
• The petrol price is around $1.2 per litre. It's a bit more expensive in the north, around  $1.3. The cheapest petrol we found was from Ayr, $1.1/litre.
• If you go to Woolworths or Coles and spend over $30 you normally get a discount voucher of 4 cent/litre to their partner stations (BP/Caltex/Shell). You can also get a same discount when you spend certain amount of money at their servos. 

We have driven approx 12 000 kilometres so far and we still have our Uluru trip ahead. Let's see how much we have when it's time to sell the van.

Auton osto // Buying a car

Wagga Waggasta kertovassa postauksessa kerroin, että lähdettiin sinne auton ostoon ja se tuli myös tehtyä. Nähtiin ilmoitus Gumtreessä, josta löytyy kaikkea maan ja taivaan väliltä. Yleisimmät haettavat asiat taitaa olla työt ja autot. Oltiin myyjään yhteydessä sähköpostilla ja koska kaikki vaikutti hyvältä ajateltiin ottaa riski ja lähteä Wagga Waggaan asti katsomaan autoa. Saatiin alkuperäisestä hinnasta tingittyä $100 pois ja hintaa jäi vain $2300. Auto taisi olla halvin campervan, joka oli oikeasti siisti. Ostimme siis auton jolloin kulkuväline sekä yöpaikka reissun ajaksi oli hommattu.

Menimme heti seuraavana päivänä NSW:n service centeriin Waggassa siirtämään auton rekisteröinti. Laitettiin auto minun nimiini, koska ikä vaikuttaa vakuutuksiin. Kaikki meni siihen asti hyvin kunnes piti täyttää osoitekenttä. Siinä ei olisi ollut mitään ongelmaa jos olisimme olleet vielä Sydneyssä, olisimme vain näyttäneet kuitin vuokrasta missä näkyy osoite ja homma olisi ollut sillä selvä. Tässä siis vinkki: osta auto silloin kun sinulla on jotain millä todistaa osoite. Todisteeksi saimme sitten vuokraemäntämme kirjoittaman lapun, jossa hän antaa meille luvan käyttää osoitettaan. Loppu hyvin, kaikki hyvin siis. Rekisteröinnin siirto ei ole tietysti ilmaista puuhaa vaan siitä menee viranomaismaksu ja prosentuaalinen osuus auton ostohinnasta. Meillä kokonaissummaksi tuli $101, josta viranomaismaksu oli $32 ja lyhyellä matikalla siirtomaksu oli $69 eli 3%.
Rekisteröinti Australiassa tehdään aina autolle vuodeksi tai puoleksi vuodeksi. Se ei ole henkilökohtainen vaan siirtyy auton mukana seuraavalle. Meidän "rego" on voimassa maaliskuun loppuun asti. Huom. Australiassa nämä autoasiat vaihtelevat osavaltioittain, joten tämä pätee vain NSW:ssä.

Yritimme parhaamme mukaan ostotilanteessa katsoa kaikki asiat autosta, mutta aina ei voi kaikkea huomata. Mitään huoltokirjaa autosta ei ollut ja myyjä ei ollut mikään mekaniikan asiantuntija, joka tuli huomattua. Käytimme auton siis korjaamolla, jossa he katsoivat, että auto on siinä kunnossa, että sillä voi lähteä hyvällä omallatunnolla keräämään vähän enemmänkin kilometrejä. Tarkastuksessa selvisi, että jarrupalat oli asennettu väärin ja jarrulevyt olivat kuluneet, joten sekä eteen että taakse piti laittaa kokonaan uudet setit. En mene yksityiskohtiin kun en niistä mitään tajua :D Venttiilikopantiiviste tuli myös vaihtaa. Kokonaisuudessaan tämä lysti maksoi meille noin $1000, joten auton hintakin pompsahti muiden kanssa samalla tasolle. Ajatuksena oli löytää auto alle $3500, joten vielä oltiin budjetissa tämänkin jälkeen. Tärkeintä tässä hommassa on tietysti turvallisuus, joten kaikki kunnossa siltä osin.

Niin ja sitten itse autoon.  Tämä kaunokainen on siis vuoden 1994 Toyota Townace. Kaksilitrainen bensakone, manuaalivaihteet. Ajettu noin 282 000.
Takaosa on muutettu kätevästi makuutilaksi, josta löytyy hyvin säilytystilaa. Ostimme myös omat säilytyslaatikot vaatteille. Meiltä löytyy kuiva-ainekaappi, kylmälaukku (jota emme pidä kylmänä), siivouslokero, työkalulokero, keittiökaappi ja sekatavarakaappi mistä löytyy pesuaineita yms.
Sängyn toisen puolen saa nostettua seinälle kiskoille, jolloin esim. sateen sattuessa autossa voi myös hengailla.
Takana oleva tarra "Wannabebego" viittaa asuntoautomerkkiin Winnebago eli meillä on siis wannabe asuntoauto. Myyjä sanoi, että tarra kääntää katseita ja saa porukan nauramaan ja se on jo koettu.
Auton katolla on markiisi, jonka saa kätevästi ja nopeasti pystytettyä ja sen alla on mukava paistatella päivää tai pitää sadetta. Katolla ja auton alla on vesitankit, joten vettä on aina mukana. Ostimme myös suihkun (muovinen kiinaihme, joka maksoi $8), jonka saa liitettyä tankkiin niin on hätävarana mukana.

Tässä vielä kauppoja mistä löytää kaikkea mahdollista mitä saattaa tarvita campervanin varusteluun:

Bunnings - vastaa Suomen Kodin Terraa tai K-Rautaa, mutta isompi ja halvempi
Kmart - kaikkea kodintavaraa, vaatteita, elektroniikkaa yms.
Big W - samanlainen kuin Kmart
Target - kts. kaksi edellistä
Bcf (Boating Camping Fishing) - nimensä mukainen
Barbeques Galore - retkeilytavaraa, grillejä yms.
Aussie Disposals - retkeilytavaraa ja vähän Varusteleka tyylisiä juttuja
Spotlight - kankaita, kodintavaraa yms. Löytyy hyttysverkkoa metritavarana

Auton varusteluun meni yhteensä noin $260. Ostimme retkituolit ja -pöydän, kaasulieden + patruunoja, tyynyt (vähän paremmat), lakanasetti, keittiösetti, siivousjuttuja ja pesuaineita,  säilytyslaatikot vaatteille ja pussukan lakanoille. Siinä taitaa olla suurimmat menoerät.

In the post about Wagga I told that we had bought a van from there. We found it from Gumtree where you can find anything, I guess jobs and cars are the most common ones. It was a bit of a risk to leave Sydney but we had been talking a lot with the seller and everything seemed good. The original price was $2400 but we got it for $2300.

We went to the NSW service center the next day to transfer the registration. We decided to put it under my name since I'm older and age affects on the insurance price. Everything went well until they asked our address, which we don't have... It would have been okay if we would have bought the van while in Sydney since then we could have shown the receipt of the rent. Well we managed to get a letter from the landlord in Sydney where she states that we can use her address, so everything went well in the end. The transfer is not free of course, you have to pay a stamp fee and 3% of the purchase price. For us it was $32 for the stamp and $69 for the transfer. Please note that the car stuff is different in every state/territory so this only applies for NSW.

We tried to check everything of the van before we bought it but I guess it's impossible to see everything. We took the van to a mechanic in Wagga and there was a couple of things that needed fixing, the front and rear breaks and a valve cover gasket (can't remember the exact name). The van was super cheap so we were kinda expecting something. The bill for the breaks and gasket was approx. $1000. Our budget was $3500 so we still kept it.

So the car itself is a 1994 Toyota Townace which is 282 000 kilometers driven, manual, 2 liter petrol engine and it's a rear wheel drive. The back part of the car is turned into a campervan where you can sleep. There's a lot of storage, we a kitchen draw, cleaning "cabinet", an icy, tool&car stuff cabinet and a big draw for all the miscellaneous stuff. The other side of the bed can be lifted on the rails (as seen in the first picture). It has two water tanks, one on the roof and another in the base. We bought a shower head with $8 so that we can have a shower "in a case of emergency". There's an awning on the roof which is super handy for rain or shine.

We spend approx. $260 in the stuff for the van. The biggest things we bought were a camping table and chairs, a portable gas stove, pillows (which weren't the cheapest ones), sheets, a kitchen set, cleaning stuff and storage boxes for clothes and bedding.

Oh and the sticker on the back "Wannabebego" comes from motorhomes which are called "Winnebago". So ours is a wannabe motorhome ;) it always humors the locals.
