Koh Tao part 2

Ensimmäinen osa takana ja tässä tulee osa numero kaksi, joka jää myös viimeiseksi.

Lueskelin edellistä tekstiä ja tajusin kirjoittaneeni sitä kuin matkaopasta. Ei ollut mitenkään tarkoitus :D
Päivät saarella menivät aika rennosti rannalla loikoillen ja muutenkin rennoissa tunnelmissa, joten en kokenut järkeväksi kirjottaa mitenkään päiväkirjan omaisesti. Siinä ei olisi ollut mitään jännää.

First part out and here comes the second part which is also the last part. I was reading the last text and realized that I wrote it like a guide book :D So sorry that was not my intention. Days on the island went past hanging on the beach and relaxing so I found it hard to write it like a journal, it would have been quite boring as well. Hope you enjoyed it anyways, here comes the next part.

Sää ja ympäristö // Weather and environment

Sää saarella ollessamme oli vaihteleva, mutta pääosin mainio. Lämpöasteet nousivat varmaan joka päivä yli 30 asteen ja auringosta saimme myös nauttia. Pieniä kuurosateita tuli pari kertaa, mutta niistä ei ollut haittaa. Iltaisin saattoi tuulla kovasti, joka sattui yleensä sopivasti ruoka-aikaan. Koh Taolla on aina sellainen sää, että sinne voi mennä. Nytkään ei ollut ns. turistisesonki ja sää oli oikein mainio. En välttämättä edes haluisi sinne kun on kuumin aika. Ilmankosteus on jotain aivan käsittämättömäntä ja tuntuu koko ajan siltä kun olisi höyrysaunassa :D Hiki tulee pienestäkin kävelyreissusta ja Koh Taon ollessa aika mäkinen niin hiki on taattu.

The weather varied from extreme sunshine to cloudy days with some rain here and there. The rain wasn't too bothering and actually made the air fresher which was nice. It was over 30 degrees Celsius the whole time but the humidity made it feel like even hotter. There's always a good weather on Koh Tao, high season or low season. The humidity makes you feel like you're in a steam room all the time and makes you sweat all the time.

Koh Taon saari on palmujen peitossa oleva paratiisisaari, josta löytyy kuvankauniita hiekkarantoja turkoosine vesineen, yksityisiä laguuneja, koralleja, kivisiä rantoja komeine kallioineen sekä korkeita huippuja, joista näkee jopa viereiset Koh Phanganin ja Samuin saaret.
Valitettavasti turismin myötä saaren ekosysteemi on uhattuna, joka näkyy parhaiten korallien kunnossa. En väitä, että turistiti aiheuttavat kaiken vaan eritoten paikalliset tarvitsisivat koulutusta kuinka asiat hoidetaan ympäristön kannalta hyvin. Tarjoilijamme Jim kertoi, että vielä viisi vuotta sitten korallit olivat kauniit, värikkäät ja elävät, mutta kuten itse saimme huomata ne olivat nyt lähinnä harmaat eikä elämää ollut paljoa :(

Koh Taolta, toiselta nimeltään Kilpikonnasaari, ei löydy enää luonnonvaraisia kilpikonnia. Ne ovat siirtyneet pois paremmille pesimäalueille. Jim sanoi myös, että rannat olivat ennen mustanaan rannalla pesivistä kilpikonnista, me emme nähneet ainuttakaan.
Hankeita kuten "Save Koh Tao" on perustettu vaalimaan ja auttamaan saaren ekosysteemiä sekä ratkaisemaan ongelmia esim. jätehuoltoon liittyen ja kouluttamaan ihmisiä kestävän kehityksen periaatteista.
Saarella käy noin 350 000 matkailijaa vuodessa, joka on tälle pienelle saarelle todella paljon. Kehitys on ollut liian nopeaa ja saaren infrastruktuuri ei ole kehittynyt sitä mukaan mitä asutus ja turistien määrä on kasvanut. Valitettavasti saarelle rakennetaan koko ajan vain uusia resortteja.
Roskien kierrätys on olematonta ja meressä on todella paljon roskaa. Hylättyjä rakennuksia ja tontteja, laittomia kaatopaikkoja ja roskakasoja on katukuvassa paljon. Meistä tuntui pahalta katsoa kaikkea sitä roskaa ja miten asioita hoidettiin, emme olleet laisinkaan varautuneet siihen kaikkeen.

Koh Tao is true paradise island with palm trees, beautiful sandy and rocky beaches with turquoise waters, corals, laguuns and high hills were you can even see the neighboring islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Unfortunately mainly because of tourism the island's ecosystem is in danger. I don't just blame the tourists, the locals should be educated how to run businesses so that the environment doesn't suffer from it. Our waiter Jim told that five years ago the corals were beautiful and colorful full of life but unfortunately now like we saw the corals are grey and there's not many species left.

Koh Tao which is named after turtles, the Turtle Island, no longer has any turtles. They have moved away to better breeding waters. Jim also said that the beaches were black with breeding turtles in the past. Campaigns like "Save Koh Tao" has been established to save the ecosystem and as well as to educate people how to run businesses in an environmental friendly ways. Koh Tao gets approx. 350 00 travellers a year which is a lot for such a small island. The development has been too fast and the infrastructure hasn't kept up with it. More and more resorts are build to meet the needs of the tourists.
Recycling is almost non-existing and there's a lot of garbage in the ocean. We saw many abandoned houses and land with so much waste and also illegal landfills. We were quite shocked about how bad some things were and totally not prepared for all of it.

We accidentally came across the island's reservoir. There was a lot of signs on the island which advises to spare water.

Snorklausreissu // Snorkeling trip

Koska olimme saapuneet sukeltajien paratiisiin, piti meidänkin käydä veden alla. Ensin oli suunnitteilla tehdä Open water diver kurssi, mutta ajateltiin säästää se raha Ausseihin ja käydä vaan snorklaamassa. Sitten kun Suomeen palataan niin sukelluskurssista ei paljoa enää iloa ole kun kirkkaat vedet on muisto vain.

Saaren ympäri meneviä snorklausreissuja järjestää kymmenisen yritystä. Valitsimme sukelluskoulumme mainostaman Siammarina travel. Kaikki toimi oikein hyvin ja järjestäjät olivat rentoja. Voin suositella tuota firmaa. Päivän reissu maksoi 750 bahtia per henkilö eli noin 21€. Nouto oli 9.30 ja paluu hostelille puoli viiden maissa.
Matkaan sisältyi taksikyyditys satamaan ja takaisin hostellille, snorklausvarusteet (ei räpylöitä), vakuutus, kevyt lounas, kahvia ja teetä, kylmää vettä ja keksejä niin paljon kuin maistui.

We took a snorkeling trip one day which started around 9.30am and ended in the afternoon around 4.30pm. The trip was only 750 baht which is around 21€. It included taxi rides to harbour and back to hostel, snorkeling equipment (no fins), insurance, light lunch, coffee, tea, cold water and biscuits as much as you like.

Nang Yuanin saarelle on 100 bahtin sisäänmaksu, joka ei sisälly hintaan. Saarella vietettiin vapaasti pari tuntia. Snorklausvarusteet sai mukaan myös saarelle. Saarelle ei saanut viedä muovipulloja eikä räpylöitä ja laukut tarkastettiin ennen sinne menoa. Me kävimme näköalapaikalla mihin oli aikamoinen kiipeäminen, mutta se oli sen arvoista.

Entry fee to Nang Yuan island is 100 baht which was not included. It is also prohibited to bring plastic bottles or fins. They check your bags when entering. We spent a couple of hours on the island doing what ever we wanted to do. We went to the viewpoint which was quite a sweaty climb but totally worth it.

Nähtävyydet // Sights 

Nähtävyyksiä ei saarella oikeastaan ole. Saari on itsessään sinällään nähtävyys ja tietysti monet tulevat sinne vain sukeltamisen takia. Koh Nang Yuan saari on myös nähtävyys kuten myös rannat ja lahdet noin yleensä. Niitäkin on monia eri tyyppisiä.
Kävimme kuitenkin pienen ilmaisen matkaoppaamme vinkkaamissa paikoissa, jotka olivat lähinnä näköalapaikkoja. Skootterilla pääsi hyvin käymään näissä kaikissa.

There's not actual sights on the island. I think the island itself is a sight worth seeing. Many people just come there to dive and that's how you see a lot more. Koh Nang Yuan is a sight as well as the beaches and bays on the island which vary quite a lot.
We had a free guide which listed some sights and viewpoints which we visited when we had the scooter.

Koh Tao part 1

No niin! Nyt ollaan jo Sydneyssä ja vihdoin aikaa kirjoittaa. Ei tarvitse rientää kiireessä paikasta toiseen. Nyt on nähty siis Bangkok, Koh Tao, Kuala Lumpur sekä Singapore ja Australian seikkailun on aika alkaa :)
Viime postauksessa jäin siihen kun saavuimme saarelle. Olimme siis saarella 8 yötä jos se on jäänyt mainitsematta. Olen yrittänyt kehittää tekstiin otsikoita, mutta teksti saattaa lähteä silti rönsyilemään.

Tästä tulikin aika pitkä, joten päätin jättää loput toiseen postaukseen. Silloin lisää saaren nähtävyyksistä, snorklauksesta ja luonnosta. Pysykäähän kuulolla!

O' righty then! I finally have time to write since we are in Sydney now. Bangkok, Koh Tao, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are all behind us and time for the Aussie adventure to start.

I've tried to make up some topics but I'm sure I'll go off topic in some point... Last post was about our trip to the island so let's continue from there. Oh and if I've forgotten to mention we were 8 nights on the island.

This became quite a novel so I decided to make two posts. The other one will be about sights, snorkeling and nature. Stay tuned!

Kylät // Villages

Saarella on kolme suurempaa keskittymää eli ns. kylää: Chalok Baan Kao, Mae Haad ja Sairee. Tuossa järjestyksessä menevät pienimmästä suurimpaan. Meidän kylämme oli siis Chalok Baan Kao saaren eteläpuolella. Kylästä löytyy kaikki tarvittava: ravintoloita, sukelluskouluja, baareja, resortteja, bungaloweja, 7 eleven (pieni marketti), pari pankkiautomaattia, skootterivuokraamoita, pesuloita yms.

Mae Haadissa tuli käytyä pari kertaa, tämä kylä on keskittynyt sataman ympärille, josta suuremmat laivat ja lautat operoivat. Mae Haadissa ei ollut sinällään mitään nähtävää, joten ei ole kirjoitettavakaan. Samat palvelut kuin meidän kylässä, mutta suuremmassa mittakaavassa ja enemmän turistikauppoja.

Saireen kylä on muodostunut saaren pisimmän rannan Saireen ympärille. Saireen ranta on miltein 2 kilometriä pitkä ja sen varrelta löydät suurimman osan saaren sukelluskouluista. Wikipedia kertoo, että saarella myönnetään maailman toiseksi eniten PADI-sertifikaatteja (Cairns komeilee ykköstilalla).
Saireella kävimme vain kerran kun vuokrasimme skootterin. Loman tarkoitus oli rentoutua ja Saireella se ei ole mahdollista turistimäärän takia. Olimme todella tyytyväisiä, että emme ottaneet hostellia Saireelta. Eikä se rantakaan sen ihmeellisempi ollut. Jos kaipaat biletystä ja örveltäviä brittituristeja niin mikä ettei (tai mene vaan suoraan esim. Koh Samuille).

There's three main villages on the island: Chalok Baan Kao, Mae Haad and Sairee. This is the order from smallest to the biggest. We stayed in Chalok Baan Kao which is located on the south side of the island. There's everything you need: restaurants, bars, diving schools, resorts, bungalowes, a 7 eleven, a couple of atm's, scooter rentals, laundry places etc.

Mae Haad and Sairee are quite similar but Sairee is bigger and has a beach almost 2 km long. Mae Haad has the harbour where you come and go to the island with boats and catamarans. Sairee has the long main beach which means more tourists, shops, bars, restaurants and people trying to sell you stuff. We only visited them a couple of times since we wanted to relax and be without parties and noisy British tourists (sorry Rachel! But you know it's true..)

Rannat // Beaches

Meidän lähimmät rannat olivat Taa Toh ja Freedom beach. Molemmille käveli noin 10-15 minuuttia. Pari korkeaa nousua pitivät huolta, että hiki oli kun rannalle saavuttiin. Käytiin aika monena päivänä Taa Toh rannalla, josta tuli meidän suosikki. Freedom beach oli ehkä vähän isompi, mutta myös suositumpi. Vesi oli aluksi virkistävää, mutta loppulomasta se oli niin lämmintä, että ei uinti niin paljoa enää houkutellut.

Saireella kävimme kerran tepastelemassa, mutta ei uimassa tai snorklaamassa. Ranta oli pitkä, mutta siinä oli paljon sukelluskoulujen veneitä eikä houkutellut niin paljoa.

Meidän rannalla, Taa toh ja Freedom rannalla eleli musta labradorinnoutaja. Se oli todella seurallinen, hengaili pitkin rantoja ja nautti olostaan. Koira näytti oikein hyvin voivalta ja varmaan joku piti siitä huolta. Myös parin kissan kanssa tuli tehtyä lähempää tuttavuutta. Ne olivat resorttien hoivissa, joten olivat myös hyvässä kunnossa ja terveitä. Valitettavan paljon oli kulkukissoja ja -koiria :(

The beaches next to us were Taa Toh and Freedom beach. They were approx. 10-15 minutes away from the bungalows. Taa Toh beach became our favorite since it was more private than Freedom beach. At first the water was refreshing but later during the holiday it started to be so warm that we didn't feel like swimming.

We went to Sairee beach only once but it didn't impress us that much. It was long but full of boats of the skuba diving schools.

There was a friendly dog living on our neighbourhood beaches. It was in good condition and probably someone was feeding it. There was also cats who lived in the resorts which had eaten well (some were quite big...) and had shiny furs. Unfortunately there was also a lot stray dogs and cats :(

Liikkuminen saarella // Moving around on the island 

Ehdottomasti paras tapa liikkua saarella on skootteri tai mönkijä. Tiet ovat paikoin todella huonoja ja suuria kuoppia löytyy sieltä sun täältä. Joten kannattaa harkita myös mönkijää jos resorttiin menevä tie on todella huono. Asfalttia ei joka paikassa läheskään ole vaan tiet ovat hiekkaa ja epämääräistä betonia.

Skootterin vuokraus on halpaa ja helppoa. Skootterin vuokrauksen hinta vaihtelee, mutta meidän kylällä hinta oli normaalisti 150 tai 200 bahtia vuorokausi eli karkeasti n. 4-6 euroa. Vuokrauspaikkojen käytäntönä on ottaa passi pantiksi. Muista ottaa passista kopio ja pitää sitä eri paikassa kuin passia.
Tarkista skootteri aina hyvin ennen vuokrausta yhdessä vuokraajan kanssa. Tapana on, että jos jotain hajoaa se tulee korvata kokonaan uudella osalla. Meillä meni kaikki oikein mainiosti vuokrauksen kanssa.  Emme kokeneet suurta tarvetta käydä Saireella tai muualla, joten vuokrasimme skootterin vain yhdeksi päiväksi jolloin hurjastelimme saarta koko päivän ristiin rastiin. Täytyy myös muistaa, että vaikka kartaan on merkattu tie se ei tarkoita sitä, että siinä voisi ajaa esim. skootterilla kovinkaan helposti, joten varautukaa yllätyksiin ja ajakaa varovasti. Thaimaassa liikenne on muuten vasemmanpuoleinen, joten jos epäilet ajotaitojasi niin pysyttäydy takseissa.

Taksit ja kyydit olivat aina ajoissa, joten pidä kiinni suomalaisista tavoista siinä kohtaa :) Huomioi myös, että joillekin rannoille pääsee ainoastaan tai parhaiten veneellä. Venetakseja ja pitkähäntäveneitä löytyy saarelta runsaasti vuokrattaviksi.

Definitely the best way to move around the island is by scooter or ATV (four wheeler). The roads in some points were almost non-existing and in a really bad condition. Depending where your resort is consider an ATV.
Renting a scooter is easy and cheap. Ours was 200 baht for 24 hours so approx. 6 euros. They will take your passport as a deposit which is a standard thing to do. By the way, make sure you have a copy of the passport at the hostel or somewhere else than the real passport. Check the scooter well together with the person who rents it to you. It is customary that if you break something you need to replace it to a new one (repair is not an option).
Keep in mind that a road on the map doesn't necessarily mean a road you can drive with a scooter. Prepare for surprises and drive safely. Note also that some places are only accessible by boat. There's a lot of taxis and rental places for boats as well.

One more thing, taxis and pickups are normally early or at least on time so be polite and be early :) Oh and in Thailand they drive on the left so keep that in mind as well.

Ruoka ja asiakaspalvelu 

Lyhyesti ja ytimekkäästi thaimaalainen ruoka on taivaallista! Meidän pikkukylästä ei löytynyt trendikkäitä kahviloita tai pikaruokaloita (en tiedä onko Saireellakaan) ja monet paikat eivät edes tarjonneet ns. länsimaalaista ruokaa esim. pizzaa, koska ei ollut turistisesonki. Tämähän ei meitä haitannut, koska sitä ei todellakaan ollut ikävä. Thaimaalaisesta ruuasta löytyy varmasti jokaiselle jotakin. On paljon riisipohjaisia ruokia, hapanta ja makeaa, tulista ja mausteista, nuudeleita, raikkaita salaatteja, erilaisia curryja, äyriäisiä, hedelmiä, kookosta ja paljon muuta. Oma lempparini on green curry ja Ilarin fried rice with chicken. Syö siis rohkeasti paikallista ruokaa. Se on terveellistä, todella maukasta ja paljon halvempaa kuin länsimaalainen ruoka :) Esim. oma lempparini maksoi riisin kanssa tarjoiltuna paikasta riippuen 120-170 bahtia eli noin 3-4 euroa ja Ilarin aikalailla saman verran. Annokset ovat sen kokoisia, etta nälka kyllä lähtee. Olut ruokajuomana on hyvin halpaa. Hinnat vaihtelevat paikoittain, mutta halvin mitä meidän lähipaikoista löytyi oli 80 bahtia eli n. 2 euroa reilun 600ml Chang-pullosta. Viini sen sijaan kallista, esim. lasi talon viiniä maksoi 130 bahtia eli n. 3 euroa (jolla olisi saanut jo yhden ruoka-annoksen!)

Kuulimme yhdeltä suomalaiselta pariskunnalta (ainoat suomalaiset ketä tapasimme koko reissun aikana), että hostellimme lähellä yhdessä vähän hienomman resortin ravintolassa on suomea innokkaasti puhuva tarjoilija. Pitihän meidän se nähdä ja ei muuta kun syömään. Hinnat olivat hieman korkeammat kuin peruspaikoissa, mutta palvelusta kannattaa maksaa. Paikan nimi on J.P. Resort ja se on Chalok Baan Kaon rannalla. Tarjoilija heti tunnisti meidät pohjoismaalaisiksi ja kysyi mistä olemme kotoisin. Hän sanoi puhuvansa hieman suomea ja meille selvisi, etta hän puhuu aika paljonkin ja on halukas oppimaan koko ajan enemmän. Tässä paikassa kaikki tarjoilijat olivat oikeasti töissa, eivatka näpränneet kännyköitä, katsoneet telkkaria tai juorunneet muuten vain. Tarjoilija, joka myöhemmin esitteli itsensä Jimiksi oli kotoisin Burmasta ja sanoi opiskelleensa liiketalouden tutkinnon siellä. Jim puhuu englannin ja suomen lisäksi mm. ruotsia, norjaa, tanskaa, espanjaa, ranskaa, venäjää, saksaa ja monia muita kieliä. Ei tietenkään sujuvasti, mutta sen verran, etta pystyy palvelemaan asiakkaita. Jim palveli meitä uskollisesti loppuloman ajan ja otettiin vielä yhteiskuvakin. Jim on huipputyyppi, jonka takia kannattaa todella käyda tuolla syömässä: ystävällinen, mukava ja asiantunteva tarjoilija. Ylittää todella odotuksesi!

Palvelun taso tosiaan vaihteli todella paljon, mutta ainakin meidän kylässä sita sai vain pyytämällä (lukuunottamatta J.P. Resorttia). Thaimaalaiset ovat todella ystävällisiä, nauravaisia ja mukavia ihmisia noin yleisesti, mutta asiakaspalvelu ei valitettavasti ole heidän vahvuutensa. Ole siis valmis odottamaan ja itse kävelemään tiskille tilaamaan ja pyytämään laskua. Ruuat tulivat kyllä joka paikassa nopeasti, mutta palvelu oli hidasta. Eikä tämä johdu tarjoilijoiden puutteesta, parhaimmillaan olimme ainoat asiakkaat ja kuusi työntekijää vain pyöritteli peukaloitaan.

To put it shortly: Thai food is heavenly! Don't even look for any western food places (cos they are also hard to find) but eat local food! I'm sure you'll find your favourite from Thai kitchen. There's a lot of dishes with rice and noodles, sweet & sour, spicy and hot, fresh ingredients and salads, different kind of curries, seafood, fruit like coconut and a lot more. My favourite dish is green curry and Ilari's is fried rice with chicken. Eat local food because it's delicious, healthy and a lot cheaper than any western food :) Beer is cheap even in restaurants, 80 baht for a more than 600ml Chang bottle was the cheapest we found near our place. Too bad for me (who loves wine) wine is quite expensive. For example in the same place a glass of house wine was 130 baht which is around 3 euros (you could get one meal with that money!)

We heard from another Finnish couple (the only Finnish we met on the island) that there was a Finnish speaking waiter in one of the a little bit fancier resort's restaurant. The prices were a bit higher but you can pay a bit extra for service. The place is called J.P. Resort and it's on the beach road in Chalok Baan Kao. The waiter (who later introduced himself as Jim) immediately noticed that we were from the Nordic countries and started having conversations in Finnish every time we went there. Jim is eager to learn more and speaks many languages like French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Russian and many more. Of course not fluently but enough to serve customers well with their mother language. Jim is originally from Burma and has a business degree. He's the best server ever: always happy, pleasant and truly a customer service expert. Many regards to Jim if you're reading this, hope to see you again some day! Thank you again for making our holiday in Koh Tao even better :)

The customer service varies a lot, unfortunately in many places you have to wait a long time before any service. The staff is more keen to watch the tv, play with their phones, chat with colleagues or just sit and daydream about something. Thai people in general are really happy, smiling and kind but unfortunately customer service is not their best feature so prepare to wait. The food always came fast but service is really slow.

Lähdimme Bangkokista torstaina 17.9. kohti Chumphonia ja Koh Taon saarta. Juna lähti illalla klo. 19.30. ja saavuimme Chumphoniin viiden maissa aamulla. Juna oli hieman myöhässä kunnostus- ja rakennustöiden takia, mutta ei onneksi niin paljoa, että olisi vaikuttanut jatkosuunnitelmiin. Asemalla oli innokkaita naisia palvelemassa meitä jo siihen aikaan ja tarjoamassa aamiaista. Meidän ei tehnyt oikein mieli siihen aikaan syödä vielä mitään. Yö ilman unia saattoi myös vaikuttaa asiaan.

Juna oli siisti, mutta nukkuminen tosiaan mahdotonta ainakin minun unenlahjoillani. Rytinä, pauke, hyppiminen tai liukuminen varmistivat hyvin hereillä olon. Olin varma, että putoan yläpunkasta jossain kohtaa. Juna ei pysähtynyt kovin montaa kertaa, mutta aina kun pysähtyi niin sisälle tuli aivan hirveä pakokaasun määrä.

We left from Bangkok on Thursday 17 September towards Chumphon and island of Koh Tao. The train left half past seven in the evening and arrived in Chumphon around five in the morning. It was a bit late but that didn't effect on our plans.

The ride was really bumpy and we couldn't sleep at all. The exhaust fumes kept coming in every time we stopped. I was sure that I'll fall down from the top bunk bunk in some point, luckily I didn't.

Luckily there was another with a seat but it wasn't very charming either..

From Chumphon train station around 5am

Junalippu toisessa luokassa maksoi 620 bahtia ja toinen lippu taisi olla 690. Olisikohan yläpunkka ollut tuo halvempi. Juna + "bussi" satamaan + Songserm laivamatka Koh Taolle olivat yhteensä n. 1500 bahtia per henkilö eli n. 43€. Juna-bussi-laiva-yhdistelmälippuja voi ostaa esim. Bangkokin Hua Lamphongilta "tickets for foreigners" kopista, joka on ennen varsinaisia lipunmyyntiluukkuja. Kävimme ostamassa liput paria päivää ennen ja esim. ykkösluokka oli silloin jo täynnä. "Bussi" lähti kuuden maissa kohti satamaa, matka kesti jotain 20-30 minuutin väliltä, josta laiva lähti seitsemältä. Syy miksi olen kirjoittanut koko ajan "bussi" on se, että ei se mikään bussi ollut :D Meidät Koh Taolle menevät ohjattiin lava-autotyyliseen hökkeliin missä istuttiin laitoja kiertävillä penkeillä. Takaovea ei ollut ja koko matkan sai pelätä, että rinkka pomppaa ulos kyydistä (minun sattui tietysti päälimmäiseksi).

The train ticket in second class was 620 baht and the other one 690 baht. I think the upper bed was cheaper.. The whole trip with train, "bus" and boat was about 1500 baht, approx. 43 euros. You can buy the tickets e.g. from Hua Lamphong train station in Bangkok, there's an own booth for foreigners. Check Seat61 for more details.

The "bus" left around 6am and took around 20-30 minutes to reach the harbor were the boat left at 7am. You wonder why I wrote "bus", well it was not actually a bus. It was kind of pickup truck with sort of roof. We sat along the sides on wooden benches and plus there was no back door. I was scared that my backpack will fall from the ride, mine was of course the one on top...

We made it! (This is guy is just some random passenger).

Laiva oli todella siisti ja merimatka sujui paremmin kuin hyvin. Saatiin jopa vähän nukuttua!
Saavuimme Koh Taolle suunnitellusti kymmenen maissa. Reippaina nuorina päätimme kävellä hostellille. Koh Tao on hyvin pieni saari, levein kohta 3,4 km ja pituutta on 7,6 km. Mae Haadin satamasta meidän hostellilla on noin 2 km.
Taksit saarella ovat paljon kalliimpia kuin mantereella ja aloitustaksa ainakin yhden oppaan mukaan on 100 bahtia henkilö. Julkistaliikennettä ei luonnollisestikaan ole. Kävelemään lähdettiin ja jotta saimme karistettua kaikki kauppiaat ja taksin tyrkyttäjät niin lähdettiin vahingossa väärälle tielle. Pieni kiertotie +35 asteisessa helteessä tekee vaan hyvää :D
Päästiin hyvin perille alun jälkeen, mutta voin sitä hien määrää! Sitä tuntuu vieläkin riittävän ihan tarpeeksi..

The boat ride went really well, we even got some sleep! The boat was tidy and everything in good order. We arrived in time around 10 am to Koh Tao. We thought we walk since it was only 2 kilometers to our hostel from the Mae Haad pier. Koh Tao is a really small island - length is 7,6 km and width 3,4 km.
Taxis are a lot more expensive than on mainland. They take minimum 100 baht per person. There no public transportation which you can expect. We wanted to get away from the pier fast since there was a lot people trying to sell taxi services, accommodation etc. We accidentally took one turn too soon and had to make a little detour. In +35 degree heat it was so rough to walk even without it. Well, we made it in the end but the walk felt like it lasted forever.

Meidän hostelli Bubble bungalow on oikein mukava ja hyvällä paikalla saaren eteläpuolella Chalok Baan Kao rannalla. Tämä on yksi kolmesta Koh Taon isommasta kylästä ja niistä kolmesta pienin. Mukavan rauhallista, ei yökerhoja tai örvellystä ja kaikki tarpeellinen lähellä. Nyt ei ole vielä sesonki, joten joka paikassa on aika hiljaista muutenkin.

Oltiin ensimmäiset kaksi yötä bungalowssa, jossa oli vain tuuletin. Kahden erittäin huonosti nukutun yön takia ja ehkä myös hieman nestehukkaisina päätimme siirtyä ilmastoituun huoneeseen. Oli niin kuuma, että ei jaksanut tehdä mitään ja nukkuminen oli mahdotonta. Lomalla tässä kuitenkin ollaan ja ei haluta, että loma menee ihan pilalle.

Our hostel is called Bubble Bungalowsand it's in the south side of the island in Chalok Baan Kao. Here's nice a quiet, no crazy drunken tourists or night clubs. Still you can find everything you need from here. This one of three main villages on the island and the smallest one of those.

The first two nights we stayed in a bungalow with only a fan. After two very badly slept nights and little dehydrated we decided to move to a room with air conditioning. Sleeping was almost impossible for us and we were so tired already from the trip. This is a vacation for us and we really want to be able to enjoy :)

Enää yksi yö jäljellä. Tämä on kyllä upea saari ja paljon on nähty ja koettu näinkin lyhyessä ajassa.
Huomenna aamulla laivalla ensin Koh Phanganille ja siitä takaisin mantereelle Surat Thaniin. Siellä ollaan yksi yö ja sitten heti aamusta otetaan suunta kohti Hat Yaita ja Kuala Lumpuria.

Only one night left on this beautiful island. It had been really nice to stay here and we have experienced a lot in just a week.
Tomorrow morning we take a boat to Koh Phangan and then back to the mainland to Surat Thani city. We stay there for one night and then in the morning take a train towards Hat Yai and Kuala Lumpur.
I'll make another post of our stay here :)
