Blue Mountains

Lähdimme Canberrasta maanantaina 23.11. kohti Blue Mountaisin kansallispuistoa, jossa oli aikomus olla niin kauan kun tuntuu siltä (vähän niin kuin joka paikassa tällä reissulla). Kansallispuistossa on paljon nähtävää ja sinne voisi tehdä vielä toisenkin reissun. Kävimme monilla vesiputouksilla: Katoomba falls, Leura cascades ja Wentworth Falls, joka oli ehdottomasti paras näistä. Harmi ettei ollut uikkareita mukana, olisi päässyt pulahtamaan hyvin raikkaaseen veteen. 

Kävimme tietysti katsomassa kuuluisan Echo Pointin näköalatasanteen ja sitä komistavat (vai pitäisikö sanoa kaunistavat) Three sisters kalliomuodostelmat. Erikoisempi ja pienen ajomatkan arvoinen oli Petterin vinkkaama (kiitos!) Glow Worm Tunnel, joka loisti kauniin sinisenä kiiltomadoista. Näitä ei valitettavasti saatu ikuistettua kameralle. Sitten kävimme vielä Mount Tomahilla Botanic Gardensissa kummastelmassa lihansyöjäkasveja ja jättimäisiä punapuita. 

Emme tehneet sen suurempia patikointiretkiä, yleensä tuli ihan hyvin käveltyä jo putouksiakin katsellessa. Yövyimme vähän siellä täällä, ensimmäiset kaksi yötä olimme Hazelbrookin lähettyvillä olevalla Ingar camping-alueella, jossa oli ihana lampi, mutta ajomatka sinne ei ollut ihan niin ihana.. Rambo oli koetuksella, mutta selvisi voittajana. Kolmannen yön olimme Blackheathin alueella hienossa solassa ja pari yötä sen jälkeen vielä Mount Wilsonilla Cathedral reservessa. Nämä kaikki olivat ilmaisia paikkoja mistä löytyi aina vessat (lue: huussit), pöytiä ja tulentekopaikkoja. 

Sydneystä pääsee kätevästi junalla Blue Mountaisille, joten suosittelen lämpimästi käymään jos viettää vähän kauemmin aikaa Sydneyssä. Katoomba on isoin kylä siellä, josta löytyy kauppoja, ravintoloita ja hostelleja, joten sieltä on helppo lähteä liikkeelle. 

Pahoittelen Goprolla otettujen kuvien laatua, netti on niin hidas, että kestäisi ikuisuus muuten ladata. On nyt vähän suttuisia jos katsoo isompana. Toivottavasti nautitte kuitenkin kuvista :)

We left from Canberra on 23 November towards Blue Mountais national park where we intended to stay as long as we liked (like we do everywhere during this trip). There's a lot to see and do and we could easily do another trip there. We visited many waterfalls: Katoomba Falls, Leura cascades and Wentworth Falls which was by far the best of the three. Too bad we didn't have swimwear with us so we missed the opportunity to dip in the fresh cool water of the falls. 

We went to Echo Point lookout to see the famous Three sisters and the breathtaking view of the valley. A little drive away in north was Glow Worm tunnel which was something very unique to see. Too bad we weren't able to take any pictures of them. We also visited the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens on Mount Tomah where we saw some carnivorous plants and huge redwood.

We didn't do any walkabout but we walked quite a lot during the visits to all the falls and another places as well. We camped here and there where we could find free camps. First two nights we stayed in Ingar campsite near Hazelbrook which had a beautiful lake but the drive there was awful, it was a battle for Rambo but he made it. The third night we stay near Blackheath in beautiful pass and a couple of nights after that in Mount Wilson in Cathedral reserve. All the campsites were free and had pit toilets, some picnic tables and bonfire places. 

You can access the Blue Mountains easily by train from Sydney. If you have any extra time in Sydney, I highly recommend going to the Blue Mountains. Katoomba is the center which has grocery stores, shops, restaurants and hostels so you can start from there. 

I'm sorry about the quality of the pictures taken with the Gopro.. The Internet is so slow here it would have taken me ages to post them with better quality. Hopefully you can still enjoy the pictures :)

Canberra

Lähdettiin Griffithistä kohti Canberraa lauantaina 21.11. Ajoimme yhden pysähdyksen taktiikalla ja olimme perillä joskus viiden maissa. Olin suunnitellut meille leffaillan, luvassa oli Nälkäpeli Matkijanärhi osa 2, joka osoittautui pettymykseksi. Jennifer Lawrence on ihan lempparinäyttelijäni, mutta ei hän elokuvaa pystynyt pelastamaan. Olisivat vaan tehneet yhden pidemmän elokuvan kolmannesta kirjasta. Lukekaa siis kirja mieluummin :)

Sunnuntaina käytiin parlamenttitalolla, Australian War Memorial museossa, Mount Ainslien näköalapaikalla ja piknikillä Lake Burley Griffinin rannalla. Canberrassa kaupunkielämä ei ole kovin vilkasta, mutta siellä on paljon museoita jos niistä tykkää. Canberrahan perustettiin siitä syystä vuonna 1908 kun Sydney ja Melbourne eivät päässeet sopimukseen siitä kummasta tulee pääkaupunki. Asemakaavan arkkitehtikisassa voiton vei amerikkalainen Walter Burley Griffin, mutta moni ei tiedä, että Eliel Saarinen tuli toiseksi.

Australian War Memorial museo oli erittäin hienosti toteutettu ja siellä olisi saanut menemään koko päivän. Se oli todella kattava ja näyttävä museo, jossa käydään läpi ensimmäinen ja toinen maailmansota sekä muita sotia missä Australia on ollut mukana. Paikan nimi on ehkä hieman hämäävä, varsinkin jos on katsonut vain kuvia. Me emme olleet niin valmistautuneita ja odotimme muistomerkkityylistä paikkaa missä olisi jotain tietoa sodista. Sisältä löytyi vaikka mitä: lentokoneita, sukellusvene, tankkeja ja paljon muuta rekvisiittaa. Oli hienoja pienoismalleja, videoita, äänitehosteita, vanhoja varusteita, aseita, valokuvia yms., joita oli käytetty taitavasti tarinan kerronnassa. Voittaa mennen tullen kaikki sotamuseot missä on tullut käytyä.

Parlamenttitalo oli näyttävä ulkoa ja sisältä, aula oli marmoria ja simppeli arkkitehtuuri on meidän pohjoismaalaisten mieleen. Hissillä pääsi katolle katsomaan maisemia, josta näkyi hienosti Anzac Parade ja sen päässä sijaitseva Australian War Memorial. Ilmaisia ohjattuja kierroksia järjestetään ainakin tasatunnein, joten jos haluaa nähdä vähän pintaa syvemmälle niin kannattaa mennä sellaiselle. Infossa vaan ilmoittautuu kun menee sisälle. Parlamenttitaloon sisään mentäessä oli muuten turvatarkastus lentokenttätyyliin.

Canberrasta löytyy paljon museoita, mutta koska ne eivät ole paljoa meidän mieleen, lähdimme parin päivän jälkeen kohti vuoria eli Blue Mountainsia. Niistä lisää seuraavassa postauksessa :) Nauttikaahan taas kuvista!

We left from Griffith towards Canberra on Saturday 21st November. We arrived around 5pm and went straight to the cinema to get tickets to Mockingjay part 2. I was so excited about the movie but unfortunately it was not as good as I hoped for. Jennifer Lawrence is one of my favorite actresses but she couldn't save the movie. It was exactly like the book but somehow failed to capture the action. Read the book is my advice :)

On the next day we went to see the Parliament house, Australian War Memorial, Mount Ainslie lookout and had a picnic by the Lake Burley Griffin. Fun facts about Canberra: it was established in 1908 because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't decide which would be the capital. The architect to plan the city was voted and Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen was placed second. Walter Burley Griffin, an American, won it whom after the lake is also named.

Australian War Memorial was really well done and very interesting. We were expecting a bit less but there was heeps to see (yes, Aussies use the word heeps a lot). There were a lot of old army wear like guns and clothes, miniatures, photos, videos, sound effects and much more. There was even airplanes, submarines and a tank inside! You can easily spend many hours there learning about the different wars and how Australians were apart of them. The Anzac Parade which can be seen from the Parliament house leads the way to the Memorial.

The Parliament house was quite a sight to see. The building is located on a hill so you can spot it from a distance. The lobby was made of marble and the simple architecture was pleasing our Nordic eyes. You can take the elevator to the roof where you can see the huge flagpole, Anzac Parade and Australian War Memorial. Free tours are arranged several times a day, just go to the info to sign up.

There's a lot of museums in Canberra but since we are not so keen to go to museums we left after two days to Blue Mountains. I'll write about them in the next post :) Enjoy the pictures!
