Olimme iltapäivällä perillä ja menimme suoraan MADEC-toimistoon, joka välittää farmitöitä harvest labour). Pääsimme saman tien perehdytykseen, jossa katsottiin lyhyt video siitä miten farmitöissä tulee käyttäytyä ja mitä ottaa huomioon esim. hygieniassa, vaatetuksessa ja turvallisuudessa. Saatiin farmin contractorin nimi eli henkilön, joka hoitaa työntekijät farmille. Soitimme hänelle ja sanoi, että aloitetaan heti seuraavana aamuna kuudelta. Hänen piti tulla meitä vastaan aamulla ja meidän piti ajaa peräkanaa, mutta jostain syystä hän unohti sen.. Löysimme kuitenkin perille ja yhden minuutin kirsikanpoiminta oppitunnin jälkeen aloitimme hommat.
Niin sanotun TES:sin mukainen palkka on $12 14 kilon laatikolta. Meille maksettiin dollari enemmän. Laatikoita (engl. lug) tuli molemmille ensimmäisenä päivänä vain 5, mutta parhaimmillaan saimme muina päivä 8 tai 9. Meidän ei ole pitänyt maksaa asumisesta, joten rahaa jää hyvin säästöön.
Kirsikoiden poiminta on haastavaa, koska se riippuu paljon puusta. Jos puu on hyvin harvennettu ja puu ei ole turhan korkea niin poiminta on helppoa. Toiset puut tekevät pienempiä hedelmiä ja ne ovat kiinni suoraan rungossa kun taas toisissa on isoja hedelmiä, jotka roikkuvat tertuissa. Olettaa saattaa, että terttu on helpompi ja nopeampi poimia ja rahaakin tulee enemmän. Kirsikat tulee poimia varren kanssa ja jos tertussa on useampi niin ne pitää erottaa toisistaan, joten ihan miten sattuu niitä ei voi repiä. Loppua kohden tuli uudet ohjeet, että saa poimia tertuissa, joten se nopeutti keräämistä.
Olimme kirsikkafarmilla 8 päivää, viimeiseen päivään asti. Päivät menivät tosi nopeasti, vaikka viiden päivän jälkeen herääminen alkoi olla vaikeampaa. Viideltä aamulla herätys, puoli kuudelta menoksi ja kuudelta sitten hommiin. Työpäivä loppui klo. 13-15 välillä. Loppupäivä menikin sitten aina toipuessa työpäivästä :D Huomenna tai viimeistään ylihuomenna lähdetään kohti Canberraa. Töitä tehdään sitten taas jossain välissä kun siltä tuntuu :)

We left from Wagga towards Griffith which is approx. 190km to the northeast, a two hour drive away. I saw a job post in jobactive which is a government held site. The harvest labour is separately so it's easy to look for just farm jobs. We arrived in Griffith in the afternoon and headed to MADEC office which is an employment office for harvest labour. The induction started just after we arrived so we got it done and learned how to act in a farm i.e. hygiene, work safety and clothing etc. We got a contact information for the contracter and he said we start the next day at 6am. He was supposed to meet us up front and drive with us to the farm but he forgot. We found the farm well with his instructions and after a minute long guide to cherry picking we started to work.
The minimum wage is $12 per 14 kilo lug but we got $13. On the first day we only got five each but on the best days we got 8 or 9 each. We haven't paid for any accommodation so we have been able to save money. Picking cherries is not easy and the tree affects a lot on how fast can you pick. If the tree is really tall and hasn't been pruned well, picking is hard. Also the size of the fruit varies. The bigger the easier. You must leave the little stick in the cherries when you pick them so you can't just grab them from the tree either.
We worked there 8 days until the end of the harvest. The days went past really quickly; we woke up at 5am, left at 5.30am and started to work at 6am. The days normally ended between 1pm and 3pm. After five mornings it felt so hard to wake up but we were happy that we didn't give up.
Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow we're heading to Canberra. It's time to change the scenery and hit the road again. We'll stop and do more work in some point again :)
